Junior Rider Profile – Jacob Simpson

Occupation: Student

Horse’s name, age and breed: Sioni is a wonderful 12 year old pure Welsh Section D

Horses history, how did they end up being a superstar TREC horse!
Sioni is a very recent addition to the TREC family as I have only had him roughly 5 weeks. However he has taken to TREC incredibly well and is already producing some good scores and with the training planned in place, he will be more than ready for Holland

How did you get into the sport of TREC?
I was first introduced to TREC by my Auntie by competing in the winter leuges when I was around 12 and as I got older she took me to my first, full summer competition. From there I never looked back!

What do you love about the sport?
I love that it isn’t a test of just one thing like other disciplines. It tests all sorts of different forms and styles of riding with it’s three distinctive phases.

What is your favorite Phase and why?
My favorite phase has got to be the POR. Although it can be the most frustrating thing at times, I love the challenge of being out on my own, navigating across whatever terrain is thrown at me – just me and my horse and no one else. Being able to get in the zone and getting your brain in gear with no one else around to distract you is one of my favorite things.

What advice would you give someone wanting to get into the sport?
Just go for it ! Just enter a level 1 (or 2 if feeling confident) competition, either on your own or find someone else that hasn’t tried it before and wants to give it a go as a pair. But the main thing is just have fun and enjoy it!! Dont worry about your scores- just enjoy your first competition.

And the one moment of TREC you will never forget!
Its tough to pick just one moment but for me it’s between two so far….
The first one is representing my country last year at the 2023 European Junior Duo and Young Rider Championships in Spain. To get selected and to compete at that level is a dream come true ! The same goes for being selected to do it all again this year.
My second moment is my first ever individual competition which is much more recent. It was my first time competing as an individual and only my horses second ever TREC competition. I achieved my highest ever POR score and finished 4th overall. Unfortunately I missed out on a place in the top 3 due to a silly error by me. Despite this, it’s still one of my favorite moments in TREC so far !
